Happy Celebrating Chinese New Year ! I love dancing Chinese Classical Dance & my 4th self learn dance will be related to plum flower. In this post, I am sharing with you a little discovery about my plum flower dance and the importance of “The Art of Story Telling For Your Brand. ”

First, I need you to CLICK on the youtube video below , play the music in the background before you slowly read my blog … It will sooth you from the all hectic errands of chinese new year …

I am learning this new dance called plum flower dance inspired by Pricess ShouYang of Song Dynasty …

Princess ShouYang’s Plum Flower Story lasted for thousands of years

She is a very playful young girl … during the 7th day of chinese new year, after she felt tired of playing whole day …she went to take an afternoon nap @the plum flower garden …while she was sleeping, the wind blew gently & petals of plum flowers start falling on her …the sun starts to set when she slowly woke up,she was covered with the beauty of plum petals …she woke up without realising that natural plum petals … her servants liked what they saw and her look became the “plum flower make up”

It is known in history that when we refer to the plum flower goddess, this is referring to Princess Shouyang from Song Dynasty … What really struck me was how easy and simple day to day story like this can be  remembered after One to Two Thousand Years ?

Can we apply this to our own personal brand or own business ? The answer is YES ! Do you want your business to be remembered by people ? The answer is in the Art of Story Telling …

I read a book by Branding Guru in Taiwan called Mr Shi Zhen Rong 施振荣 (the founder of Acer Computer) , he said, if you want people to remember you or your brand, you have to communicate consistent message that are relevant to them in a regularly basis … Story telling for a brand do not need to be like very dramatic , it is the ability to relate day to day user experience & incorporate it to your brand …

To Create Story for Your Brand, It can be as simple as day-to-day life experience … Something for people to relate to in their lives

There are 4 stages of branding

  • Stage #1: People Do not Trust or Do not Love Your Brand (Most Brands started off this way, So don’t worry too much if your brand is at this stage)
  • Stage #2: People Trust but Do not Love Your Brand (people will Buy your products but will not spread words & highly recommend to their friends)
  • Stage #3: People Do not Trust but Love Your Brand (people will Not Buy your products but will highly recommend to their friends)
  • Stage #4: People Trust AND Love Your Brand (this is your die hard fans that you want your customer to be)

If you want to progress from Stage #1 to Stage #4, there are 4 processes:

  • Process #1: Create Awareness – Do people know your brand ?
  • Process #2: Create User Experience – Have people tried your products and services ? Do you have offers to entice people to engage with your brand ?
  • Process #3: Positioning – What do people remember you as when others mention about your brand ?
  • Process #4: Remark – Here’s the trick … If your brand is so-so, you will hear people say “that brand is good, errr, good” , they can’t like go further besides “good” … if your brand is somehow remarkable , you’ll hear people analysing, giving more than 2 sentences of bad or good remarks … Don’t be too upset if people give bad remark to your brand, this is a good sign because it proves that your brand is “worth” other people spending their time trying to say bad things about it … haha !

Plum Flower Make Up Became Very Popular because of the STORY of Princess ShouYang’s afternoon nap under plum flower tree garden

So, the Art of Story Telling is useful especially when you want people to go thru Process #1 and Process #2… you want to make “awareness” and have new people start to “engage” and “try use” your product & services …  This is the initial step you must do in order to have the market pay attention to you … this is the “soft” part that you must do well…

Once you have them experimenting your products or services, you must use the “hard” part, the real expertise or professionalism of yours in order for them to position you where you want them to, and to give good remarks to your brand …

Your story must be related personally to you … and not created due to some “corporate reasons” , that’s very boring and you won’t have any passion telling your story anyway … Your story also have to be simple for people to relate to …

For example, Princess ShouYang “woke up with plum flower petals” on her forehead and that was a simple moment that is ENOUGH to made her immortally link with the plum flowers. As long as there’s plum flowers, people will FOREVER remember Princess ShouYang …

Maybe it’s time to think of a SIMPLE story for your brand … 🙂

If you have one, please share with me … I am glad to listen …
